Venue Description
M Chinnaswamy stadium, being in the heart of the state capital, continues to remain one of the greatest cricketing hubs of the country. Starting as a simple dwelling, the stadium has now become a showpiece site, capable of hosting some of the greatest cricket matches in the country.
Home to some of the classiest match-winners in India, Chinnaswamy stadium, in its maiden Test match, had the privilege of hosting the West Indies in 1974.
The match also saw the birth of two current legends, Gordon Greenidge and Sir Viv Richards. Since then, the stadium has routinely held Tests, albeit it’s regrettably acknowledged as one of India’s unluckiest grounds.
Bangalore hosted the last Test against Pakistan in 1987, known more for the minefield of a surface and the resulting 96 from Sunil Gavaskar, one of the finest ever centuries performed by the little maestro.
The venue also hosted Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell Test as India’s captain against South Africa in February 2000, enabling Hansie Cronje’s men to seal a historic triumph.
Unlike conventional Indian pitches, Bangalore delivers greater speed and bounce, which is one of the primary reasons international teams love playing on this surface.
Floodlights were erected on this wonderful pitch in 1996, and the first D/N match was the dramatic duel between India and Pakistan in the 1996 World Cup.
The other widely discussed event at this location is the Titan Cup encounter between India and Australia in 1996. India squeaked home by 2 wickets after local heroes Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath were involved in a spectacular 52-run stand for the unbroken ninth wicket.
Bangalore also hosted two India matches at the 2011 World Cup, with the game against England finishing in an exciting draw. The venue is also a regular site of IPL matches, with RCB playing all their home games in front of their most passionate and noisy supporters.
How does the pitch play?
The short boundaries and high altitude of the Chinnaswamy pitch make it a paradise for batters in limited-overs matches. Numerous high scores have been posted and pursued with great ease.
While it is a batter’s paradise in the shorter forms of the game, the pitch tends to favor pacers in the Test format. Many pacers have enjoyed showcasing their skills in the five-day edition of the game at one of the few Indian grounds with a spicy surface.
Stats and Trivia:
In 2013, against Australia, Rohit Sharma scored his first ODI double-century on this ground, a splendid 209.
The venue also hosted Ireland’s greatest victory. Kevin O’Brien’s 50-ball century in the 2011 World Cup match against England was the quickest in a WC match.
