In July, the Indian cricket team will face England in one Test, three One-Day Internationals, and three Twenty20 Internationals. The sole Test match of the tour is the rescheduled Test for India’s five-match Test series in England in 2021.

Before India could face England in the fifth Test in Manchester, their team was struck by a spate of COVID-19 instances, resulting in the postponement of the match.

Both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the England Cricket Board (ECB) agreed to reschedule the fifth Test to 2022, a year in which India was already scheduled to play white-ball matches.

In Test cricket alone, India and England have squared off 130 times. England won 49 contests, India won 31 contests, and 50 matches ended in a tie. Both teams have played in 103 ODI matches, with India holding the advantage with 55 victories to England’s 43.

India won 10 of 19 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against England, while England won nine. Past year, when England toured India, they lost all three series, and they have also lost their last three T20I series, both at home and on the road.

India VS England 2022 Squads

The BCCI has already named 17 players for the postponed fifth Test in Birmingham. The previous tour’s captain of the Test squad, Virat Kohli, will be replaced by Rohit Sharma.

The Indian opener KL Rahul was initially nominated to the 17-man Test team, but he will miss the England visit to receive medical treatment in Germany.

The Indian cricket board has yet to declare the teams for the white-ball series, while the ECB has not released any squads for any of the three forms.

IND vs. ENG 2022: Three Indian Players Who May Retire From Test Cricket After The Series

In July, the Indian team will travel to England for a multi-format series. India’s trip to England in 2022 will feature a rescheduled fifth Test, three Twenty20 Internationals, and three One-Day Internationals. Rohit Sharma will captain the side throughout the series, and all key players will return for the Test.

India has picked a 16-man team for the only Test against England. Test team members include, among others, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah.

A few players may not continue to play Tests beyond the IND vs. ENG series. Here, we discuss three such Indian athletes.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Therefore, Ashwin may consider retiring from Test cricket after the IND vs. ENG series.

Umesh Yadav

Umesh Yadav is an additional participant on this list. Umesh Yadav is not a regular part of the Test team, although he is frequently allowed to play.

He has participated in 62 Tests and has taken 158 wickets. Since Umesh Yadav is frequently snubbed for a spot in the Test team, he may decide to end his Test career after the India vs. England series.

Cheteshwar Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara is an additional participant on this list. During the IND vs. SL Test series, Pujara, who exclusively represents the Indian side in the Test format, was dropped. He has struggled with poor batting form over the past year.

In his absence, several young batters, like Hanuma Vijari and Shreyas Iyer, have demonstrated great confidence and skill in the middle order. If Pujara fails to perform well against England, he may consider retiring from Test cricket.

India’s travel plan for England tour

• BCCI has instructed Rohit Sharma and the other Test team members to meet in Mumbai by June 15.
• On June 16, all players save Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, will go for England.
• Before boarding the journey to England, all players undergo two sets of RT-PCR Covid testing.
• Before traveling to England, everyone who tests positive will be required to wait and observe a mandated isolation period.
• The second group, including head coach Rahul Dravid, will depart from Bengaluru for London on June 19.
• Similar to the last tour, players can bring their families on the England tour.
• There will not be any charter flights at this time.

Playing 11 for Team India:

Openers: Rohit Sharma & Shubman Gill

With Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul available and healthy, India’s captain and vice-captain should have been the first-choice openers.

With KL Rahul’s availability in the fifth Test match uncertain owing to a protracted Groin ailment, Shubman Gill appears to be the strongest option to open alongside Rohit Sharma.

Gill was in excellent form during the IPL, and he might prove handy for India by providing solid starts.

However, India might also choose to play veteran Cheteshwar Pujara with Rohit Sharma as their opener. Pujara should ideally play in the number three position.

But since Hanuma Vihari, who performed well in that position, is likely to play there, Pujara can only play the opening. His recent county form might prove useful if India decides to pursue this strategy.

Middle-order: Hanuma Vihari, Virat Kohli & Shreyas Iyer

In the middle order, India should field the same three players as they did in their previous home Test series against Sri Lanka. Except for Kohler, Vihari and Iyer performed well throughout the Test series, which should give Team India the confidence to continue with them in the one-off Test.

Even when Pujara returns in fine form, removing any of these players would be unreasonable simply because Pujara performed well during the county season.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli, who has performed poorly since 2020, scoring zero hundred.

Even though Virat Kohli’s present form was poor in the IPL, a format change might bring him success. Also, considering Virat Kohli’s tenacity, expect him to create an impression in both his innings at Edgbaston.

Lower-order: Rishabh Pant & Ravindra Jadeja

Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja are the two batsmen batting at the bottom of the order. India will again play Rishabh Pant as the first-choice wicketkeeper and Ravindra Jadeja as the first-choice all-rounder in the lower order.

This is the strategy that Team India employed in the England series last year. Although Ashwin’s batting has improved significantly, Jaddu will continue to be the first-choice all-rounder unless he fails to recover from his injury.

Bowlers: Sharduk Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah & Mohammed Siraj

Coming to the bowlers, India will deploy Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj most frequently. However, Team India can still discuss whether to include the in-form Umesh Yadav instead of Mohammed Siraj, given their IPL 2022 performances were dissimilar.

Additionally, India might consider fielding three pacers and Ashwin in England, although the move seems improbable.

Meanwhile, Team India’s two frontline pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will again be entrusted with responsibility.

Shami’s swing and Bumrah’s off-pitch movement will be essential for taking early wickets with the new ball. If India is to win the historic Test series, the performance of these two players will be vital.
