Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has stated that the third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will occur from July 31 to August 21. According to an SLC media release, the registration of foreign players for the player draft “shall begin shortly.”

Despite rumors that a sixth team would be added to this year’s competition, SLC has announced that it will remain a five-team tournament. Similar to the previous year, the group stage games will be held in the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, while the Qualifiers, Eliminator, and final will be placed at the MRICS in Hambantota. There will be a total of 24 games played throughout the event.

In a press release, SLC president Shammi Silva commented, “We are ecstatic to announce the third edition of the Lanka League, which has begun its road toward carving a position in the worldwide T20 League competitions as a formidable championship.”

Jaffna had won both editions of the tournament in 2020 and 2021, first as the Stallions and subsequently as the Kings following a rebranding by the club’s new owners. Both times, the Galle Gladiators have been the losing finalists.

IN OCTOBER, the LPL will be part of Sri Lanka’s cricketers’ hectic schedule for the T20 World Cup in Australia. The July 31 start date signals a quick turnaround for those participating in Pakistan’s July tour to Sri Lanka, the dates of which have yet to be determined. Sri Lanka will host the Asia Cup in September before going to Australia for the world competition.

Sri Lanka Premier League Teams 2022

Friday, Sri Lanka Cricket announced that the third season of the Lanka Premier League would commence on July 31. On August 21, 2022, the five-team LPL 2022 will conclude with Kandy Warriors, Dambulla Giants, Colombo Stars, Galle Gladiators, and Jaffna Kings. Twenty-four matches will be contested during LPL 2022, which will take place in Colombo and Hambantota.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) established the Sri Lanka Premier League in 2018, with the inaugural competition in 2020 following many postponements. Jaffna Kings (Jaffna Stallions in 2020) is the most successful team in the competition, having won the first two tournaments against Galle Gladiators.

SLC also informed that foreign player registration for the player draught would begin shortly. This year’s tournament will consist of 24 overall matches. The tournament’s full schedule has not been released, although the early matches will occur in Colombo before moving to Hambantota.

Colombo Stars

Colombo Stars, previously known as Colombo Kings, is a franchise Twenty20 cricket team located in Colombo, Sri Lanka, participating in the Lanka Premier League. Murfad Mustafa, an Indian businessman, residing in Dubai, once owned the squad.

The team was intended to be coached by Dav Whatmore, a former Australian cricketer.

However, he was replaced by former English cricketer Kabir Ali before the 2020 Lanka Premier League for personal reasons. Herschelle Gibbs replaced Kabir Ali once again after he tested positive for COVID-19. Angelo Mathews was chosen as the marquee player, while Andre Russell was designated the premier international player.

Due to financial concerns, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) canceled the franchise before the 2021 Lanka Premier League in June 2021.

After a change in ownership in November 2021, the team was renamed the Colombo Stars.

Galle Gladiators

Galle Gladiators are a professional Twenty20 cricket team from Sri Lanka that participates in the Lanka Premier League. In 2020, Nadeem Omar acquired the Quetta Gladiators franchise in the Pakistan Super League.

Wasim Akram, a legendary cricketer from Pakistan, is the team’s mentor, while Moin Khan and Azam Khan serve as coach and manager, respectively. Shahid Afridi, Pakistan’s premier all-rounder, signed as the headline foreign player.

Jaffna Kings

Jaffna Kings, known as Jaffna Stallions, is a Sri Lanka Premier League franchise cricket side (LPL). The squad won the first Lanka Premier League 2020 Championship on December 16, 2020, and is the current holder of the championship.

Thisara Perera, the team captain, and Shoaib Malik, a winning team member, played crucial roles in the victory.

The squad was owned by an international consortium of Sri Lankans and Indians from Australia, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Arnold Anandan and Rahul Sood, founders of Microsoft Ventures M12, led the coalition of Pacific Northwest and Silicon Valley tech sector heavyweights.

The Jaffna Stallions also established a worldwide education partnership with Code.org.

As part of their outreach to Sri Lanka, the Jaffna Stallions have published a song in collaboration with renowned singers La Signore, alias Lahiru Perera, and Dinesh Gamage. The song combines Sinhalese and Tamil lyrics and is now at the top of the Sri Lankan charts.

Former Sri Lankan captain Thilina Kandamby coached the squad. Thisara Perera was the captain of the team.

Dambulla Giants, formerly known as Dambulla Viiking, is a Sri Lankan Twenty20 franchise cricket team participating in the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

Due to financial concerns, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) canceled the franchise before the 2021 Lanka Premier League in June 2021.

After a change in ownership in September 2021, the team changed its name to the Dambulla Giants.

Kandy Warriors

Kandy Warriors, originally known as Kandy Tuskers, is a Sri Lankan franchise professional Twenty20 cricket team that participates in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and was created in 2020 to represent the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Chris Gayle was signed as the headline international player, while Kusal Perera was signed as the flagship local player. After a change in ownership in October 2021, the team changed its name to the Kandy Warriors.
